Teeth sometimes need help staying white. Even the most dentally diligent might need a boost, and Charvet Dental Center can help with that! Today, we’ll tell you some tips to achieve a brighter smile with teeth whitening.
Types of Whitening Treatments
Before we narrow down what we offer in our own office with Dr. Charvet and Dr. Charvet Jr., we want to discuss some of the varieties you might encounter outside of a professional setting. These can be effective for some, but we always recommend professional whitening over other options.
- At-Home Kits: These can be over-the-counter or provided by a professional; they usually involve trays that contain whitening gel. Following specific instructions, patients can complete this method remotely. It will typically take longer than in-office alternatives.
- Whitening Toothpaste: This is a great thing to use for anyone—but it’s not terribly effective on its own. We recommend it for use after professional treatment to maintain results. They contain mild abrasives and polishing agents and help remove surface stains. You should notice gradual results if you forego more advanced treatment.
- Whitening Strips: These are thin, flexible strips coated with a whitening gel. They’ll be applied to teeth for a specified amount of time and can be convenient and easy to use at home.
- Whitening Rinses: Mouthwashes with whitening agents, used daily as part of oral hygiene routine, also provide a subtle effect over time.
- Natural Remedies: Some people seek natural solutions like oil pulling or baking soda. These aren’t strictly scientifically proven methods, so results may vary from person to person.
Zoom Teeth Whitening
One method we proudly offer in our practice is Zoom Teeth Whitening. This is an exceptionally professional method of whitening. Let’s walk through the process:
- Procedure: Prior to starting, we’ll make sure your teeth are in the correct condition for the procedure. Part of the advantage of this treatment is that it is overseen by our team to ensure both the process and results are satisfactory.
- Whitening Gel: Zoom uses a hydrogen peroxide-based gel that is applied to the teeth. This gel is designed to break down stains and discoloration on the tooth enamel. This is also where customization comes in, since the gel comes in different strengths. We’ll work with you to accommodate your preferences and sensitivities.
- Zoom Light Activation: A special LED light is used to activate the whitening gel. It helps to enhance the penetration of the gel into the enamel, therefore making it a quicker process.
- Duration: A typical session tends to be 1-2 hours. This involves multiple gel applications, usually lasting about 15 minutes each.
- Results: By the end of the procedure, patients can expect to see their teeth several shades whiter.
- Post-Whitening Care: Certain substances should be avoided after the procedure. This includes coffee, tea, and tobacco, which can all naturally cause staining. Some patients may find their teeth are sensitive post-treatment, but this is a temporary effect.
Other Tips
- Regular Visits: By sticking to your routine dental appointments, we can assess whether or not your teeth and gums are in an adequate state for whitening.
- Maintain Good Hygiene: Brushing your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste allows you to maintain good oral health.
- Drink Water: Consuming a lot of water each day can help rinse away pigments, sugars, and acids from your teeth. This is especially useful after drinking beverages that might cause stains. We also recommend using straws since it minimize contact with your teeth when drinking.
- Be Patient: If you don’t opt for a professional method, you can expect your results to appear over a period of time. It’s important to be consistent in this kind of treatment.
- Quit Smoking: This isn’t a great habit to begin with, but it can have dire dental consequences due to staining.
Words of Caution
There are some things to be mindful of when it comes to a process like teeth-whitening. The following should be considered:
- Tooth Sensitivity: If you already experience sensitivity in your teeth, definitely mention it to your doctor. It can help us to be careful during the process.
- Gum Irritation: Whitening gels can cause irritation to the gums. Ensure that you only apply it to the teeth.
- Overuse: This is a more common issue than you might think. Some people might assume you can’t have too much of a good thing—but you definitely can. Overuse of whitening products leads to sensitivity and damage to the enamel.
- Pre-Existing Dental Issues: Cavities, gum disease, and exposed tooth roots can all compromise the effects of whitening. We’ll definitely talk about this before treatment planning.
